Sharing personal experience I can say that reciprocal links are one of the great inventions of the Internet. Links save tons of job for search engines. Imagine how much information search engines would need to index! Reciprocal Links – Play by The Rules of Search Engines.

Most of the problems with reciprocal links exchange emerge when site owners or webmasters start violating the rules of search engines. Let’s face it: if you want to get free, targeted traffic from search engines, you either play by their rules, or try to find traffic somewhere else.

The rules of search engines are very simple.

(1) Your web site must give value.

Don’t make a dummy site with pure directory, and Google listings, and maybe Google ads. This type of site gives no value: no useful info, no quality product or service – nothing. When the user of search engine finds such a web site on the search term, this can irritate greatly. Users report to search engine, human editor comes to the site, sees its ‘value’ and the site gets to black list.

I had a client who had some problems with IP being blocked by Google. When I came to his site – Oh my God – seems like everything that could be violated was violated. It is good that Google gets every site the chance to get back on board, if the violations are taken out.

(2) Reciprocal links exchange must be relevant.

If some years ago search engines wouldn’t go that far in indexing the relevancy of links, today the picture looks absolutely another way. It is easy to index the link and check if the description and title of link coincide with the topic and niche of web site.

Of course, as the owner of web site you have all rights to put any kind of links on your web site – it is your business. But since you want to rank top from reciprocal links exchange with search engines, forget about your ambitions. Pick only relevant web sites and do link exchange with them.

(3) Exchange reciprocal links with reputable web sites.

The hidden truth is that for Google it does not matter what Page Rank the page with your reciprocal link has. Or better say – even PR 0 links count. The more relevant links, the better for your site.

But surely having your reciprocal link on 5 pages with (for example) PR 6 helps you to get indexed very fast, without sandbox for 2+ months and other unnecessary pain.

That is why never lose a chance to do reciprocal links exchange with a page that has nice Google PR, this will add more value to your web site in the eyes of Google. And Google is still the top search engine.

A hint where you can find many web sites that are ready for link exchange and have pages with nice PR. Check the sites that have automatic reciprocal links exchange directories installed. Most of the pages in these directories have PR from 3 to 7. And it is so easy to automatically submit your reciprocal link to all of them.

Follow these guidelines and learn more from those who already succeeded. Be wise and reasonable with reciprocal links exchange, and this will give you tremendous fruits in the end.

Before we go any further, what is “link popularity”? In very simplistic terms, link popularity refers to the number and quality of the incoming links that are pointing to your site. These other sites consider your site important enough to link to. So, in the engine’s view, your site is considered important as well. What is meant by “link popularity” can get much more complex, which is discussed further in this article.

However, one of the most difficult areas of SEO is building link popularity. Why? Because the engines don’t want “artificially created” (or useless) links, so there are no easy ways to build link popularity. The days of link farms and huge link exchange programs are over. Try those strategies now and you can easily find yourself booted out of an engine.

Rather, the engines want links from authoritative sites, or links from sites that share the same focus as your site.

But besides the link popularity you gain by getting an authoritative site to link to you, you also gain additional visibility for your Web site. So, when working on building link popularity, don’t forget those two basic reasons for requesting links.

The Purpose of this Article

Because building link popularity is one of the most difficult and time consuming aspects of search engine marketing, we decided to join forces with each other and with other search engine optimizers to create a list of legitimate ways you can build link popularity for your site.

When looking through this list, you may find strategies that are subject to abuse. If you use them as recommended in this article, you will have no problems. Abuse them, and you’re treading in potentially dangerous waters.

Stephen Baker with Fast said one of the most memorable statements I’ve heard as it relates to what the engines like or don’t like to see. He said:

“Our position is pretty straight forward…it’s not the technique that we are concerned about, it’s the intention.”

So, always keep that statement in mind when you consider linking or any other strategies for your Web site. Analyze your intentions, and if you wouldn’t mind an engine knowing what you’re doing, your intentions are okay.

Now that we’ve gotten the preliminaries out of the way, let’s get down to business: learning ways to increase the link popularity of our sites. To write this article, we went to professional search engine optimizers for their ideas. After each strategy, we briefly attributed it to the SEO who sent it to us, and then we provided a list of all contributors along with their companies and URL’s at the end of the article.

Keep in mind that these strategies aren’t in any particular order. Also, keep in mind that though it isn’t always stated explicitly, we’re always referring to “related” and “important” or “authoritative” sites as our targets.

Start with the Basics:

This is by far the oldest and best-known method of improving link popularity. Basically you e-mail or contact the Webmaster of a site that is complementary but generally not competitive to your own. You ask them to link to your site while outlining the benefits of doing so. You would generally offer to link back to them in exchange for this courtesy. Be sure you have developed genuine content on your Web site of interest to the trading partner. Explain the advantages to them and to their visitors by providing a link to your content. Tell them where the link on your site will be or set the link up in advance with the stipulation that you’ll be glad to leave it there if they’ll add a link to you in kind. Take the time to look over their site and then suggest where a link to you might be appropriate. Most importantly, personalize your e-mails! You must distinguish yourself from all the spam they receive daily. If the link is particularly important to you, call them personally or write them a letter or send a fax to show them you’re serious. Try to imagine building your site starting with the deep content pages and working your way back to the categories which lead to the homepage.

Surprise! Those marketers aren’t giving you free information just because they’re super-nice (although they might be… I know I am!). They do it because the more people who download files from their websites means the more page views they get. This greatly improves search engine rank!

5. Frequently Updated Content.

Give your fans and the search engines something to look forward to. Every time you put up a fresh article, new e-book download, fun quiz or special promotion, you drives hordes of new visitors to your website. This is GREAT for your page rank and ultimately great for your business. You can add pages of content to your site by featuring articles from other authors, publishing your monthly newsletter pages live in an Index, or updating your Products page regularly with new items from affiliates of yours.

There are so many smart ways to keep traffic flowing steadily in to every page of your website for better rank and a higher placement on the search engines. These are just five of them. In the last series, I have asked you to join as many Traffic Exchange programs as possible. If you have not then do it now! (this also proves that you have not been following me! How could you?)

Crazy Browser has a feature that allows you to save combinations of web site addresses as individual groups. Now, let’s try one out.

Assuming you have joined Traffic Swarm, type your surf-for-credit URL for Traffic Swarm in the address bar and hit the Enter key.

Now, repeat the same process for the rest of the Traffic Exchange programs you have joined. The other pages will appear under new tabs. After you have entered all the web page addresses of the Traffic Exchange programs, click on the main menu “Groups” and then click “Save All Pages as Group”. Give the group a name (e.g. “Traffic Exchange”) and save.

Now every time you start the program, you just click and open the group folder. All of your Traffic Exchange programs will load on the same page.

Now isn’t that awesome?

If you have a slow connection, opening so many pages at the same time can be stressful for both you and your computer. Perhaps, surf as many as 3 to 4 pages at the same time.

You can set your own time and connection speed limit.

Setting Your URL Campaign

The next thing to do on the list is to set your URL campaigns. Since you are now surfing for credits, those same credits will be used to drive traffic to your web page.

In the URL Manager for all the Traffic Exchange programs you have joined, set the URL to point to your web page where visitors can subscribe to your regular newsletter or get a free e-book or report for free.

Set the URL Manager to point to those pages and nothing else! Why? Here are some hard and fast rules:

[1] Visitors who use the Traffic Exchange programs like you are usually not in a mood to buy anything when they use the programs.

[2] If you have been using Traffic Exchange programs for some time, you will find that most of the pages you see are looking to reach for your wallet. While there is nothing wrong with that, these people have yet to gain your trust let alone prove their worth.

[3] You will want to separate yourself from these people by offering a free newsletter or give away at your web page in exchange for their name and e-mail address. Since people will not have to fork out their credit card just yet, they would like to have something for free. Don’t you, too?

[4] If you have a website selling products or services, it is unwise to direct users of Traffic Exchange programs to the Killer Sales Letter straight away like a charging sales man (which is why I said differentiate yourself from others!).

I hope I have convinced you enough.

The beauty of getting visitors to subscribe to your regular newsletter or get a free e-book or report from you is that you have a chance to prove your worth and build trust and rapport with them.

This beats assaulting people with a sales letter which will produce little or no sales. I have tried it before so don’t you even try it, too!
