Supervision Still Lacking for Children Browsing the Net

A recent Ofcom report showed that parental supervision or filters and controls are still not being used at optimum levels while children are using the internet. Ofcom is the regulatory body for UK’s communication industry and carries out studies and reviews of the industry from time to time.

The new research concludes that both teens and children are increasingly allowed to access internet in the privacy of their bedrooms, which in most cases pre-empts any parental control over what they are doing. The results were published in the Children’s Media Literacy report.

Statistics show that about one third of 12- 15 years olds can access the internet in their bedrooms and about 60% do so without adult supervision. Basic checks regarding authenticity of the website and accuracy of information are not carried out by about a fourth of this group.

However, the good news is that children now are considerably more aware of protecting their private information on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. A healthy 10% increase in the number of children who restrict access to personal information reveals this cautionary trend.

In the 8 to 11 year group, one out of every six children has internet in his or her room, with a third portion of this number using it when alone. Among 5 to 7 year olds, 2 out of 10 use the internet on their own, revealing that parents are not strictly supervising children’s online habits. Compared to 2007, these figures show a steep rise in the number of children being given free access to internet.

With so many parents voicing their concerns about the risks of allowing children to browse the internet, it is surprising to note that less than half have actually taken proactive steps to ensure the safety of their children online.

UK Broadband Provisions under Intense Scrutiny by Parliament

The Parliament is all set to begin investigations into the Digital Britain report’s levy idea to see if the customers will actually get what they are being asked to pay for. Research Starts on 10GB Broadband

TSB has announced that it would be offering a total of £1 million of funding to researchers for coming up with solutions that would make it possible to provide a 10Gb connection to both residential and commercial users.

TSB, which is an arm of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, has also revealed that the network researchers who would be working on such a project have already been selected.

The allocated £1 million seems too small when compared to what the setting up of such an ambitious plan using existing optical technology on the scale it is being planned would cost. According to a recent study by the Broadband Stakeholder Group, the cost of installing optical cable connections, which providing such high broadband speeds would currently require, across the UK would cost a staggering £29 billion.

BT had recently made known its plan to make a broadband connection of 40MB available to 40 percent of the UK population by the year 2012. TSB has shown that BT has probably not been ambitious enough in planning out the future of broadband. There’s fierce competition, and very low overheads etc. However you need to acknowledge the history of the telecommunication companies and their relationship with computer networks, and the way data actually travels around the web. Long before computer networks became important telephone companies were using digital communication. At the start the original digital voice circuit was used in Chicago in 1962 although ARPANET, the predecessor to today’s Internet, wasn’t up and running until 1969. The telecommunication companies used these digital circuits to make lots of voice connections over long distances something that analogue circuits were unable to do and to this day still use them for this purpose.

Voice communication have several unique characteristics. For one thing, it’s inherently real-time. When computer networks began popping up in the 1980s companies wanted in. They already had a lot of infrastructure in place so they began looking at how they could send data over their existing trunk lines. They came up with numerous technologies with different levels of success. But there was (and still is) an issue: data networks are essentially different than voice networks.

Data is transferred in packets, which can arrive out of order long after they’re requested, without causing any issues. Internet Protocol (IP) was created to provide best effort delivery. Telecommunication companies had an expensive network in place, so there was a lot of incentive to use it. After some trial and error Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) was designed as a compromise technology that could carry both voice and data. However it’s much less efficient than a pure data network. The costs for data transfers on ATM is more than 10connection, compared to about one percent for an Ethernet running full-throttle.
