A British court has penalised global defence major BAE systems for failing to ensure the safety of its workers, which lead to the death of an employee in an explosion at the company’s Lancashire site.

The case, which came up for hearing at the Liverpool Crown Court, relates to the death of Lynda Wilkins, a worker at the Chorley unit of BAE Systems Land Systems (Munitions and Ordnance) Ltd.

On March 2, 2005, Wilkins was killed while working with lead styphnate, a sensitive explosive. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated into the cause of the accident and found that the company’s negligent attitude in maintaining safety standards at the workplace was responsible for Wilkins’ death. The HSE, however, could not ascertain the exact reason of the mishap since there was no one working with Wilkins when the explosion killed her.

The HSE filed a lawsuit against the company at the Liverpool Crown Court where BAE Systems of Farnborough Aerospace Centre in Hampshire accepted responsibility for ignoring the provisions of Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and failing to protect its workers.

Consequently, on January 14, 2010, the court asked the defence contractor to pay £80,000 as fine and £118,000 as costs of prosecution.

HSE Inspector, Colin Hutchinson, expressed sympathy for Wilkins’ family and blamed BAE Systems for her death. Even though the HSE had not been able to find the exact cause of Wilkins’ death, the company should have been cautious while letting its workers handle sensitive chemicals, he stated.

Hutchinson blasted BAE systems for failing to ensure a proper system for supervision and monitoring of employees as they worked with hazardous substances, adding that other explosives’ companies should make sure safety guidelines are stringently followed so that such tragic accidents do not take place again.

When the executive branch of our government decides that someone is a threat to our national security that person is taken out. They can be killed or put away in some other less lethal fashion but they become useless to whatever agenda they had before.

There is a sad part of this that I must reflect on. Many will die or be affected in some other very negative way because of their ignorance, not really because they are a threat.
