Things to Look for when Purchasing Nursing Tops

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Nursing mums are continuously searching for the best top to put on that is both stylish and practical. It’s possible to discreetly breastfeedin public places, without working with an extra towel or blanket to cover up. Great nursing tops occur in different varieties, some are simply large shirts, some have a second layer in the front, so you can nurse and mask with the second layer, and still others offer easy access via openings at the top.

After making the decision to breastfeed your baby, it’s crucial to ensure that you have the required tops to make the method a simple one. The longer a person plans to nurse their child, the more critical it’s to have good nursing tops. Recently clothing designers have done an amazing job of generating tops that are not simply incredibly practical to nursing mothers, but they are fashionable too.

Disguised Layers Give Additional Protection.

One of the ways to stay protected is to don a top that has a concealed extra layer in the front of the shirt. With this kind of shirt you lift the first layer up and protect your baby with it. Beneath you will find a top with double openings for easy breastfeeding. With this kind of shirt, you can stay fully covered with the top layer of your shirt. The only drawback is that in the start, it is a little awkward to get used to finding where the openings are, so you might need to use a blanket for protection, while you are getting used to using the shirt.

Pull Down Tops Provide Ease of Use.

Possibly the easiest shirts to use are ones that have some type of closure at the top that you are able to open up to allow easy entry for breastfeeding. With this kind of shirt you are the most exposed, so if you are a modest person you will certainly need some variety of cover up, but the convenience is second to none. These sorts of shirts either have a double opening in an under layer for ease of entry or they have a closure that you open up for the feeding, so that you don’t fully stretch the fabric of the shirt.

The Oversized Shirt.

If you are strictly looking for a practical top, proceed and try out an oversized T-Shirt. The good thing is that any shirt that gives you some extra room will work. Your baby simply goes under your shirt, so you don’t have to worry about being protected up.

It Comes Down To Convenience.

The perfect nursing top is different for every person. The most crucial things to look for have to do with each person individually. If you are a modest person, you will want the sorts of shirts that allow full coverage; the pull down kind nursing tops won’t work for you. If you are more worried about fashion, pretty much any top will work; merely keep a blanket handy for when you need to cover up.

?Finding Spring and Summer Baby Clothing to Fit All Sizes

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

With spring just around the corner and summer not far behind, if youre a parent of a newborn or a toddler you may be thinking about getting your child some clothes to suit the season. There are a lot of choices to be made when doing this because babies grow so fast in their first year and quite a few baby clothing stores tend to have the ‘one size fits all’ approach with regards to baby clothes. However just like grown ups babies come in various different shapes and sizes and that means you will need the appropriate gear! It’s wise to just get a handful of things at a time and when baby looks like they are going to grow out of those purchase some more. This will not just help your finances, but will also prevent you from having loads of useless baby clothes lying around.First and foremost on your mind needs to be your babys comfort and ease especially as this will stop them becoming cranky. The material of the clothes ought to be something that allows air to get through so babys skin can breath, something that is maybe high in cotton that will not irritate the babys skin. Your babys clothes will also take a lot of punishment with spilling, throwing up, crawling and washing so they really should be durable.Heres some advice that’s mostly for the parents comfort. Purchase baby clothes that come with those metal snap buttons instead of the regular buttons. The snap buttons make it less complicated and faster to open and close the baby’s clothing. This is fantastic if youre in a hurry or if baby is agitated. Snaps offer you easier access for nappy changes. Particularly those cold changes when you want to hurry and get baby back into some warm clothes. You may want to think about buying one pieces instead of sets when purchasing baby clothes. A set involves two pieces a top as well as pants or skirt. The bottom part of the outfit is generally held up by an elastic band round the babys stomach. This tends to result in discomfort, especially after the baby has eaten. A one-piece outfit however is usually roomy, allowing for the belly expansion with no discomfort. Babies tend to pull socks off or leave them lying on the floor as they crawl along their way. But with a one piece that has footies most of those problems are solved.Buying clothing for babies that use non-disposable nappies need not be tricky. First of all you will have to find out your baby’s size when wearing a nappy, what clothes are going to fit best when combined with the nappy and what non-disposable nappies you ought to purchase for your baby. As far as size goes purchase clothing that is a bit bigger than your baby requires. In this instance two-piece sets can be a better idea than one pieces. To determine what non-disposable nappies would be best, you should try a few and figure out which ones are right for you and your baby.

Buying Safety 1st Infant Automobile Seats

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Let’s discuss car seats and the role it plays in protecting kids. Rules and regulations inform the market to such a degree that finding what’s best for your daughter is nowhere near as easy as you might expect. The various chairs are only one of many aspects you’ll need a more detailed comprehension of to be sure of the right decision. 20 pounds, 12 months old — the usual maximum for the bulk of high-quality chairs on offer from the big, reliable brands. Keep in mind, while sorting through available seats, to think out a preference between rear facing seats and more flexible chairs to avoid selecting something not in line with your preferences. All parents know that moving your baby from your car back to the house while they’re sleeping leads almost inevitably to their stirring — but with a number of these seats doubling up as baby carriers, the chance of avoiding this improves. Lasting throughout the years during which babies need safety seats, the higher price they go for is made up for by being useful for longer. Reviews will probably also warn you that chairs in these styles are harder to carry. A good place to start whenever you’re looking at desirable car chairs must always, always be to read all reviews given that no two models are alike and different combinations of features are unlikely to be as useful for each individual child. Because of their independent status reviews like these can be relied on to be bias free, so you can trust them. After passing the twenty pounds mark, your child still needs a safety chair until approximately eighty pounds — and that’s where the booster seat comes in. At this age, your children can take part in the selection process: if you let them experience both designs (divided by the method of keeping the child safe, using either a five-point harness or the car’s integral safety belt) and see which they find more comfortable. Another thing you’ll find from the reviews is that several of booster chairs provide an inbuilt means of distracting your child during a trip.

We hope that what we covered here has helped you simplify the long process of determining the right chair for your daughter as the decision ahead is far from unimportant. Wise parents pay careful attention to comparison reviews — they’re positively the very best information resource available out there.

Supervision Still Lacking for Children Browsing the Net

Friday, October 30th, 2009

A recent Ofcom report showed that parental supervision or filters and controls are still not being used at optimum levels while children are using the internet. Ofcom is the regulatory body for UK’s communication industry and carries out studies and reviews of the industry from time to time.

The new research concludes that both teens and children are increasingly allowed to access internet in the privacy of their bedrooms, which in most cases pre-empts any parental control over what they are doing. The results were published in the Children’s Media Literacy report.

Statistics show that about one third of 12- 15 years olds can access the internet in their bedrooms and about 60% do so without adult supervision. Basic checks regarding authenticity of the website and accuracy of information are not carried out by about a fourth of this group.

However, the good news is that children now are considerably more aware of protecting their private information on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. A healthy 10% increase in the number of children who restrict access to personal information reveals this cautionary trend.

In the 8 to 11 year group, one out of every six children has internet in his or her room, with a third portion of this number using it when alone. Among 5 to 7 year olds, 2 out of 10 use the internet on their own, revealing that parents are not strictly supervising children’s online habits. Compared to 2007, these figures show a steep rise in the number of children being given free access to internet.

With so many parents voicing their concerns about the risks of allowing children to browse the internet, it is surprising to note that less than half have actually taken proactive steps to ensure the safety of their children online.

Honor Cord

There are times when it is acceptable for individuals to receive honor cord without having to dress up in a graduation gown with a cap or tam on top of their head. In addition, individuals who have a diary full of endless activities will be delighted to attend their graduation and receive their honor cord

without having to carry along ‘extra baggage’.

An honor cord is a simple, convenient and fashionable graduation outfit that can be easily be distinguished from non academic cords. Furthermore, they come in unique colors and styles that make it easy to tell whether it is intended for showing academic excellence or membership to honor society. While most academic cords of honor are usually plain gold or silver, those used by honor societies may have multiple colors such as purple and white used by beta phi mu society or the lambda pi eta society’s cord that has the colors red, gold and white. Another unique aspect about honor cords issued by the society is that they are issued to the student before graduation.

Today’s Baby Names

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

One of the most exciting things new parents get to do before the arrival of their child is choose the baby’s name. Will it be something popular or unusual? A family name or something original? We will explore the top baby names as well as some of the more unique possibilities to help you choose the perfect name.

Top Baby Names

In the 90s, the most popular name for a boy was Michael. For the past five years, the most common name has been Jacob. Other popular names include Joshua, Matthew, Ethan, Andrew, Daniel, William, Joseph, Gregory, Jonathan, Benjamin, and Christopher. If you are looking for a classic, these baby names have been popular for years.

The most popular name for a girl has not changed in the past fifteen years. It continues to be Emily, and is currently followed by Emma, Madison, Olivia, Hannah, Abigail, Isabella, Ashley, Samantha, and Elizabeth. Except for Ashley and Elizabeth, the popularity of the others is recent and affected by pop culture, especially television shows.

Other sources of popular names are best-selling novels and celebrities. After Gweneth Paltrow named her daughter Apple, many people have done the same. The Harry Potter books and the Lord of the Rings movies have also added many names to the list of the most popular.

Unusual Baby Names

One way today’s parents have created unusual names for their children is by changing the spelling of a popular name. Variations that are becoming less unusual include Emilie, Elisabeth, Karin, and Erika. Names like Stacy can be spelled in three different ways (Stacy, Stacie, Staci).

Another way to personalize a baby name is to use a nickname as the child’s full name. For instance, Ben instead of Benjamin, Jon instead of Jonathan, and Matt instead of Matthew are becoming more common.

Other unusual sources for baby names come from the world around us. The popularity of names such as April and May continues to come and go, while names such as Winter, and Hazel are still unusual. Consider choosing a baby name reminiscient of the time of year when your child will be born or the time of year they were conceived. Fruit, vegetables, colors, and the adjectives that describe them are a good starting point (Pear, Lemon, Azure). Other uncommon names are those of plants and flowers, such as Hyacinth, Daisy, and Fern.

Other ideas to get you thinking:
Africa
Autumn
Butterfly
Calla
Kansas
Peach

Names that describe an ideal or a personality, such as Hope, Grace, Prudence, Patience, Temperance, or Chastity, are still unusual although not entirely unique. Other descriptive baby names include Cadence and Candid.

Other unusual names come from sources that are not commonly used today. While Biblical names are popular, Greek mythology is only rarely used. Your child may be the only one in their class to have the name Athena, Minerva, or Pan. Or you could give them a name from another culture, such as the Swedish Carina or the Polish Aleksy.

Baby names from other cultures include:
Anuket – Egyptian mythology
Augustyn – Polish
Crina – Romanian
Dimitriy (Dima) – Russian
Freya – Norse mythology
Hestia – Greek mythology
Kirill – Russian

The possibilities are endless! But as mentioned above, remember that if the source of your baby’s name is a television show, novel, or celebrity, the name may not be that unusual when they begin school several years down the road. This is especially true for girls. Look for Apple, Reese, and Uma to be popular over the next five years.

Perhaps you’d like something even more original.

Unique Baby Names

If you don’t want your child’s name to be the same as anyone else’s, you can create a unique baby name. These names can have many sources. The more common methods of creating something original are by the combination of family names or the addition of a syllable or letter to a popular name. An example of the latter is Kylen, a unique girl’s name which stems from the boy’s name Kyle. Unique baby names which may come from a family name include Stafford, Prestoff, and Kilin. While some people may find these better suited for a middle name, others may prefer their unique nature.

A sampling of unique names:
Baton
Jaico
Kermin
Lorelai
Mady

The Meaning of a Name

For some people, it doesn’t matter whether a baby name is popular or unique, it just has to mean a certain thing. Rather than choose a baby name with an obvious connotation such as Spring, Grace, or Rose, they want a name that will bring goodwill to their child through its ancient origin.

Some popular as well as unusual baby names include:
Adelaide (Adelia, Alyssa, Allison) – noble
Albert – bright
Alethea – truth
Beatrice – traveller
Cara – beloved
Colbert – bright
Darwin – friend
Elfleda – beauty
Gertrude – stength
Hannah (Anna) – favor, grace
Henry (Henrietta) – power
Isolde – beauty
Keisha – favorite
Letitia – joy
Manfred – strength
Osmund – protector
Robert (Bob) – fame
Vivian – alive

Tips For Choosing

There are many things to consider when you finally select a baby name. Will this be a name your child can use for life, or will it sound silly when it refers to an adult? Will this name cause your child to be picked on? Will they have to constantly correct people in its pronunciation or spelling, and does this concern you? Are there any stereotypes (good or bad) associated with it?

One last concern is: does it fit with your last name? Generally it sounds better if there are a different number of syllables in the first and last names. Only rarely should the first letter of the first and last names be the same. This is of course more of a concern for boys, as they will keep their name for life. Of course, any decisions about hyphenation in the last name should be made before the first name is chosen.

Try not to get overwhelmed by the possibilities. After all, you have nine months to make this decision! Leave yourself open to the myriad sources of ideas, and you will find the baby name for you. And of course, if you let people know you’re looking, friends, family members, and even coworkers might add their own suggestions!

Keep these things in mind, and you will choose a popular, or unusual, or unique baby name that your child will be proud of for life.

Baby Products – Essential Baby Products, Which Ones Do I Really Need?

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

There are many essential baby products a new parent must purchase. Cribs, car seats, baby monitors, baby strollers, high chairs and clothing are all necessary to ensure your child’s safety and comfort. However, there are many baby products out there that are not worth wasting your money on, but are marketed to parents as being vital for a baby’s growth and development. Parents always want the best for their child and therefore purchase these items that do not serve a great function. This guide reveals the important baby products a parent must obtain to properly care for their child.

Baby Strollers

The baby stroller is an item every parent must have for his or her child. Before you purchase a stroller, however, consider how you are going to use it and the money you are willing to spend. This makes the process of buying a stroller much easier. There are many types of strollers to choose from including: full-size, mid-size, lightweight, umbrella, jogger, double and triple baby strollers. Parents who do a lot walking should consider purchasing a full or mid size stroller, while active parents are better suited for the jogger stroller. Lightweight and umbrella strollers are appropriate for parents who travel around frequently because they are easy to stow away. Finally, double and triple strollers are made for parents who need to transport two or three young children in one stroller.

Baby Cribs

Babies spend the majority of their time in the crib. Therefore, every parent should invest a significant amount of energy in selecting a safe baby crib and mattress. Safe baby cribs must always have adjustable sides, the space between the crib bars must not exceed 2 and 3/8 of an inch, and the crib must be sturdy. The crib mattress has to be firm and fit properly into the crib because the baby can suffocate if this protocol is not followed. Baby bedding ought to be kept to a minimumone cotton fitted bed sheet and a light blanket will suffice. Never place pillows, toys or heavy blankets in your child’s crib.

Baby Car Seats

A baby car seat is one of the essential baby products to purchase for your new child. The car seat protects the child against injury in the event of an accident. There are three main types of car seats available:

  • Rearward-facing infant car seats
  • Forward-facing baby car seats
  • Booster car seats

The rearward facing baby car seats are used mostly for infants who do not exceed 29 pounds to support their neck, back and spine. The forward-facing car seats are perfect for children between 20 and 40 pounds and should be secured with a tether strap on the car frame. Lastly, booster seats are made for children who can no longer fit into a normal child car seat. The booster seat basically lifts the child so they can use a regular seat belt properly. In addition, always remember all child car seats must be placed in the rear of the car away from airbags.

Baby High Chairs

A high chair is one of the baby products a parent doesn’t need right after the infant arrives home from the hospital. Although, once your child can independently sit upright a baby high chair becomes a necessity at mealtimes. Wooden, conventional, adjustable and booster high chairs are just some of the styles on the market. Regardless of the model you choose make sure your highchair has the following features:

  • The high chair must have two support strapsone should be around the waist and the other must be between the child’s legs.
  • All baby high chairs must have trays that lock firmly into the chair.
  • The legs of the high chair should be spaced apart in order to properly anchor it to the ground and prevent tipping.

Baby Clothes

Baby clothes are one of the obvious baby products a parent must buy. Keep in mind when shopping for clothes to purchase outfits that are functional for you and the baby. For instance, try to choose clothes that are not complicated to get off come changing time. Also, purchase clothing that is appropriate for the season your child is going to be born in. This step prevents you from buying clothing that is not necessary for your baby’s immediate needs. When selecting baby clothes hand me downs are a good way to go because babies grow at such a rapid pace. Hand me downs save you a lot of money and usually come in very good condition. Never buy second hand clothing that is worn out because it could potentially rip posing a safety hazard to your baby.

Baby Monitors

Baby monitors help parents keep a watchful eye on their little one without having to be in the same room all the time. This enables parents to multi-task without jeopardizing their child’s safety. Over the years there have been many technological advances in the baby monitor realm. Sound monitors are still the most extensively used ones, but now visual, temperature, movement and breathing monitors are becoming more common. Visual (or TV) monitors are great for parents who want to see what baby is up to at all times. These monitors are quite expensive, but can later be converted into a security system. Temperature and breathing monitors are useful for parents who are concerned about their child’s health. These monitors inform parents of the temperature in the baby’s room and whether it is too hot or cold.

Other Useful Items

Besides the aforementioned baby products there are many other small items a new parent needs to purchase for their child. Diapers, pacifiers, bottles, shampoo, soap, bottle warmers, a diaper pail and travel bags are just some of the baby products required. When purchasing baby products always stick to these basic items – do not get sidetracked by gimmicks. Before buying a product always ask yourself the question: “Do I really need this for my baby’s well-being?” Good luck with all the shopping!
