How High Is Your Bar?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Given the opportunity to do something how do you approach it?

My son came home from school complaining about a ’stupid rule’ his school recently established. After hearing the rule, I agreed that for a child like my son, the rule was stupid. However, I explained to him that the rule was enacted because they had to create a bar. A bar is a minimum standard of acceptance. This bar (which is set very low), is a bar that a lot of the students will use as their maximum code of behavior.

Think of an elementary school child told to read 15 minutes a day. The ones that need it the most will start getting antsy ten minutes into their reading session. By they time they reach fourteen and a half minutes, they’re already beginning to close the book. To get them to read for fifteen minutes, the bar has to be set higher.

Or, you tell your child to take out the trash. “But it’s not full is the response” No, but the rotten milk container in the trash makes it stink.” Because his bar is set to react only when the trash is full, a rancid smell is not included in his trash bar so the stinky trash will sit.

See where I’m going?

There are bars set in society in an attempt to set a minimum standard of living. These bars, are not necessarily set very high. How do you set and react to the bars in your everyday life?

I was recently commissioned to write short articles for a client. I was given a few hundred titles to write. Not knowing how many I could get done in a week, I allowed myself the luxury of 1 a day 5 days a week. It was agreed I could submit 5 articles weekly. Good. Bar is set.

After a few weeks of becoming well versed on the topic, I realized I could complete 3 times as many articles within the same time frame. Should I keep this low bar as my maximum? Should I raise my bar to commit to 15 articles rather than the original 5? Why push myself? Why reset the bar and expect more of myself.

I decided to reset the bar. Why not develop, expand and challenge myself? It’s a win-win situation. My client gets more of what he wants, and I not only rise to the occasion (a small victory for me), but I also earn additional income.

This made me look at other areas of my life. Do I need to adjust a bar here or there? I’ve found that people with low expectations tend to look at everything as near impossible rather than something to grow from and overcome. Raise the bar just once, and you may raise it twice. After raising your bars a few times, it might become a habit. You’ll start to look at everything differently,

When you make it a habit to raise your bar, other people tend to look at you as “you’re so lucky, look what you’ve got”. It’s not luck. It’s called raising the bar. Expect more from yourself and you get more.

Celebrate your victories and move on.

Fresh Start

Friday, January 30th, 2009

You almost can’t help yourself: cleaning up the house after the holidays practically forces you to take the broom and vacuum cleaner…not to mention the Windex, counter scrub and mildew repellent…roll up your sleeves and wipe up any and all messes throughout the house.

Having spent the good part of last week settling Nick into college 650 miles from home, I needed to attend to the business of taking down my Christmas decorations at the earliest possible moment this week. When I could find a whopping eight hours with nothing better to do (mail-bill-laundry-catch-up notwithstanding).

If it were up to me, the tree would stay up all year long. In fact, about ten years ago, I did just that: never took my stuff down. Kept it all up ’til the next Christmas. I loved everything about it: it provided enormous savings of my personal time, it was quite beautiful to look atall lit up at nightand it served as a near-constant reminder to keep the spirit of Christmas alive each and every day of the year.

And then I got a phone call one night from the driver of our local pharmacy, asking a most perplexed: “Mrs. Fernandez, I’m just calling because as I was making a delivery in your neighborhood, I happened to notice that you had a Christmas tree in your living room window. Just thought you’d like to know.”

(So was he calling to make sure that I knew I still had my tree up or did he want me to know that he knew that I still had my tree up? As if I couldn’t see for myself….)

Point is, although it was truly wonderful, it was a tad bit too eccentric to carry off year after year after year.

So I endure the ritualas you undoubtedly do, tooof taking everything down a week or so after the holidays. I spent the good part of Sunday dismantling swags. Lovingly wrapping angel wings. Putting my Spode Christmas Tree china back into protective boxes. And now my house looks lighter. Emptier, to be sure. No twelve-foot tree in my entryway. No lights in the windows. No angels. Nor Saint Nicks. No greens. Nor scent of Votivo’s “Joie de Noel” candles wafting through my home….

But it is cleaner. New Year. Clean slate.

Wiping things clean provokes an energetic response to action. To tackling resolutions. Writing letters. Paying bills. Organizing calendars. Initiating social invitations. Sewing on loose buttons. Removing stains. Filling in photo albums. Organizing closets. Donating clothing to charities. Throwing away garbage. Discarding old medicines. Filing medical stuff. Alphabetizing CD’s. Re-grouping books. Polishing silver. Waxing the furniture. Reupholstering. Finishing paintings. Hooking new rugs. Tying new flies.

OK. Now I’m exhausted.

But they don’t call it “New Year” for nothin’. It’s a time to start anew. To wipe the slate clean of all of your baggage, garbage and overage. And get on with brand spankin’ new. Fresh. Vibrant. Clear. Clean.

Surely you’re ahead of me. Did this a couple weeks ago. But have or have not: now is the time to grab the New Year by the horns and tackle ideas and issues, projects and plans, and agendas and activities and find homes for them. Be they homes within your home or homes within your brain; homes on your kitchen calendar pages or homes within your children’s drawers. Grab hold of the energy and power which this New Year brings and move forward. With creativity and verve! Take a step. Any step. And begin!

How Your 60-Second Elevator Script Can Transform Your Staff, Your Sales, & Your Business

Monday, January 26th, 2009

When attending a Chamber of Commerce breakfast networking
get-together, I’m always perplexed by the lack of thought and
preparation many business owners display when giving a 60-second
overview
of their business. These people have spent enormous
amounts of time, money, and energy on their businesses. Yet,
when asked to give a quick synopsis, they fumble for the right
words, they ramble, they go off on a tangent, the information
is disjointed, or the words are boring and seemingly unimportant.

Their performance creates a very poor representation of what is
otherwise a very good business. Listeners have forgotten the
pitch before it’s even over!

Some people have a natural gift for speaking well
extemporaneously, and they manage the process with great
self-control. But, for the other 80% to 90%, it’s a different
story. They muff important opportunities over and over in many
daily situations. They frequently miss the chance to make
valuable business connections or to develop brand new prospects
and customers.

Very few business people make the effort to script out a
compelling 60-Second Elevator Script (60 seconds is the time you
have to meet someone new in an elevator!) that’s committed to
memory and is able to be delivered at a moment’s notice.
However, it’s so simple to do, and it’s one of the most
effective marketing tactics you can employ.

Everyone knows the importance of first impressions during the
first few seconds of meeting someone new – - – whether it’s how
you dress, the sound of your voice, or the words you use. A
concise, well-stated business pitch costs you absolutely nothing
to develop, except for a little time, some thought, and, of
course, memorization.

I use a simple four-step process when scripting these pitches
for clients:

1. Interrupt

2. Engage

3. Educate

4. Offer.

Begin with a sentence or two that achieves the same result as a headline in a good ad. It attracts attention because it Interrupts the listener with information that has emotional meaning, usually something that deals with problems, frustrations, and annoyances of your target market.

Follow on with another sentence that Engages the listener by offering a promise of upcoming information that is important and relevant.

Next, give a quick overview that Educates your listener about exactly what you do that’s unique compared to industry competitors. You could even include a brief example. Keynote the things that differentiate your business.

Finally, conclude with a sentence or two that Offers the listener the chance to obtain more information. The offer should be risk-free and uncomplicated.

Craft and refine your 60-second elevator pitch (realistically
1 to 2 minutes). Get everyone in your company to memorize it as
a condition of employment.
(You can even provide small
incentives to pass the test.) You and your staff will then be
able to give the prefect presentation of your business whenever
the time is right: at a business meeting, in front of prospects,
on an airplane, at a trade show, as an on-hold phone message, at
a party. It’s a great conversation starter. When it becomes
your universally used marketing tool, you’ll have a coordinated
staff that’s totally at ease with the topic, and the perception
of your business by everyone outside your company will soar to
new heights!

Good luck with your marketing efforts.

Overcome Fear: You’ll Miss All The Shots You Don’t Take

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

A lot of folks are petrified at the mere thought of making an attempt. They believe they will not make it. They believe they don’t have what it takes to make it, hence there was no point trying.

How do you know what you are good at, if you don’t try? If you are so sure you will fail, then why not fail in style, by trying. If you try, you have a chance of making it. If you do not try, your chance of making it is zero.

There are odds, for and against, in every undertaking. What is the point rigging the odds against you, instead of going against the odds. By staying put, you have ensured that you do not make it. You did not make it, not because you failed, but because you failed to try.

Any time we contemplate stepping outside our comfort zone to go do something worth while, something that will impact the society positively, something we have been dreaming about doing, all our fears rear up their ugly heads. We begin to simulate all manners of “what if” scenarios. Why dream up obstacles, real and imagined. We never stop to think that most of the things we are afraid of never come to pass.

We dwell on what we don’t want, rather than what we want. And since we dwell on what we don’t what, that is what usually happens…what we don’t want.

In life, nothing ventures, nothing wins. We increase the odds in our favor when we stand up and take a shot. We become better at it as we take more shots. We learn from our past mistakes and become better. Sometime soon, when opportunity meets with preparation, we get to take a clean shot at the bull’s eye.

Some folks complain of lack of opportunities. You can create one yourself, or be prepared for it when the next one shows up. If you are not prepared, you will not recognize one, right under your nose. It may come dressed in work clothes, and walk right by, while you keep looking.

You get to miss all the shots you don’t take. To increase your odds, gather up your courage, put away your fear and attempt something. It is better to fail at something, than to succeed at nothing!

The Test of Our True Understanding

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

“And an angel of God called to him from heaven and said,
‘Abraham! Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ And he said, ‘Do
not stretch forth your hand to the lad, nor do the slightest
thing to him, for now I know that you are a God fearing man, and
you did not withhold your son, your only one, from Me.’ ”
(Bereishit – Chapter 22:11-12)

The Ramban states: At the beginning Abraham’s fear of G-d was
latent; it had not become actualized through such a great deed.
But now it was known in actuality, and his merit was perfect,
and his reward would be complete from the Eternal, the G-d of
Israel.

We are accustomed to think that when we completely understand
something but we haven’t yet acted upon it, the only thing we
are missing is the action. From this verse Rav Yerucham
Levovitz, the great pre-WWII Mirrer mashgiach learns that this
is a fundamental mistake. The truth is that if one’s
consciousness and understanding do not bring forth fruitful
actions then their ideas and perceptions are not actually real
and are in fact close to nothing.

If one starts to build a house and he builds the foundation but
never finishes the house, the construction which is left
uncompleted is never called a home and is almost considered
worthless. The same is true in the world of spirituality.
Abraham was not called a G-d fearing person until his internal
understanding of the Creator brought him to this holy and
righteous act.

All of us have many deep insights as to the nature of G-d and
clearly understand right from wrong. Yet in reality, if we do
live our lives according to our understanding it means that we
think we understand when in fact we do not. G-d put us into this
world to act and the bottom line is that essentially we are what
we do not what we know.

This should shake us until our very foundations.

Relinquishing Your Dreams

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

How many times have you abandoned an idea, project or dream
because someone made a disparaging remark or rolled their
eyes when you told them about it?

Relinquishing your dreams

All too frequently we allow others to dictate what is good,
right or possible. We allow them to steal our dreams. Notice
I use the word “allow.” No one can put you down, stomp on
your dream, or kill an idea of yours unless you allow them
to.

Consider that:

  • The movie Star Wars was rejected by every movie studio in
Hollywood before 20th Century Fox finally produced it. It
went on to be one of the largest-grossing movies in film
    history.
  • As a child, Sylvester Stallone was frequently beaten by
his father and told he had no brains. He grew up an unhappy
loner. He floated in and out of schools. An advisor at
Drexel University told him that based on his aptitude tests
he should pursue a career as an elevator repair person. It’s
not a bad profession but it’s certainly not where “Rocky”
    ended up!
  • Einstein was criticized for not wearing socks or cutting
his hair. He didn’t speak until he was four, and didn’t read
until he was seven. One observer noted, “He could be
    mentally retarded”.
  • An expert said of Vince Lombardi:”He possesses minimal
football knowledge. Lacks motivation. . .
  • Beethoven handled the violin awkwardly and preferred
playing his own compositions instead of improving his
technique. His teacher proclaimed him hopeless as a
    composer.
  • Walt Disney was fired from his job as a newspaper editor
for lack of ideas. He also went bankrupt several times
    before he created Disneyland.
  • Henry Ford failed and went broke 5 times before he finally
    succeeded.
  • Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women, was
encouraged to find work as a servant or seamstress. She
would certainly never be a writer.
  • In 1944, the director of the Blue Book Modeling Agency
told modeling hopeful Norma Jean Baker (Marilyn Monroe),
“You’d better learn secretarial work, or else get married.”
  • It Takes Courage

So what are your ideas? Your thoughts? Your dreams? Your
    plans?

It doesn’t matter if anyone supports what you want to do.
The important thing is for YOU to believe. For YOU to ignore
the people who say you can’t do it – and DO IT ANYWAY! It
takes courage. It takes persistence. It takes believing in
the “voice inside” when no one else does. Ideas, dreams and
visions are planted within you because you have the ability
to make them happen. You’ll learn, grow, scramble, fail, and
get back up again! The important thing is to simply never
give up. The people I mentioned earlier never gave up – and
    they made great things happen!

I’ll Put My Money On The “Kid”!

    Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Now, the Fun Part. It is nigh time to find a way to take all the buck out of this bucking bronco we call the internet. I mean take all the gamble out of it!! This bronco is waiting to hand over to you all the true riches of life………and obtain whatever you want… money, health, love, recognition, prestige. But, you gotta know something critical!

    Let’s Recap.

You have put up the snazziest looking website this side of heaven; you have suffered through all the expenses of designing the site; finding a hosting company; selecting the slickest domain name that any dot com company on the internet would be proud of. And what’s happening? CROWDS of people are not showing up to your website.

    That’s a Problem! What’s the Solution?

You may not realize this, but, very little separates you from the success you desire. A whole lot less than what you think. Most of the people, who have achieved greatness, did so not because they had a head full of smarts, but because they found the inner power within them to go for the gusto. And, the same spot at the top of the ladder is waiting for you too.

You want to know why? Because there is ALWAYS room at the top. Too many people don’t want to go there. They are satisfied to stay right where they’re at.

Ask yourself this question. How successful are you right now? Don’t answer that. No, I’m kidding. I guarantee you, whatever level of success you have achieved so far is more tied to your attitude than your aptitude. Success on the internet or any other playing field can be narrowed down to a systematic formula that never fails.

    Desire is the Beginning!

Listen, there is magic in desire. There is hope, there is fire, and it’s the fuel that drives us human beings to achieve greatness.

Let me give you a story to make a point. This is cute. During the depression of the 1930’s there were a lot of families starving. No, that’s not cute, just hang with me. And in a very busy city there was a little kid who wanted to make some money to help his family.

He decided to sell home grown tomatoes on a busy street corner but he was continually run off by bigger kids who threatened to make his head into a tomato. Dejected he walked away every day until one day he decided to take his tomatoes into a very busy restaurant. He walked up to the first table and sold 2 tomatoes.

Then a customer at a 2nd table saw what he had and he bought two. Then the owner of the restaurant came over and ushered him out. Well, he watched through the window until the owner was out of sight and he went back in and sold 5 more tomatoes at two other tables. Then the owner ushered him out again. But, he had already sold 9 tomatoes.

He watched again and at the right time walked back in the restaurant and started selling again. The customers really liked his gumption and started laughing; they were really enjoying the show. And, one of the customers said to the owner, “leave the kid alone”. And within five more minutes he had sold all his tomatoes.

The next day the little boy went back to the same restaurant and the owner ushered him out again. He went back in again and everyone laughed and the owner threw up his hands and said what’s the use.

Did you sense the DESIRE in this kid? Did you feel a sense of rejection? Were you waiting for the kid to kick the owner in the shins and run for his life? When I first heard it I was. :>) But, I was a rotten and mischievous little kid anyway myself. Would YOU have kept going back inside? Ah!… now I bet we hit a nerve. Now, analyze what this kid did. It was the depression, his family needed money. And he hated the taste of tomatoes. Nah…….I just made that up, that’s not true. But, I bet he was sick of eating tomato sandwiches though. Needless to say, this was all the motivation he needed to move him to action. Over and over.

Next, he discovered a technique. By walking back into the restaurant numerous times he discovered a method that allowed him to sell tomatoes in restaurants everyday. In learning this method he gained knowledge and inspiration. He learned what to say and how to say it. The more he sold the more motivation it gave him.

Now think about this. This little kid became successful at selling tomatoes. And, he didn’t have the internet to help him. Why? Because the internet is NOT one of the 3 key ingredients to success. You already know Desire is the number one, and you will find out what number 2 and 3 are in later articles. Pretty sneaky huh?’

When You Start Something……Don’t Stop Till You Get It!!

When you don’t get what you expect………..inspect what you got!. So, what do you do when everything goes wrong? What do you do when there is no place to turn? What do you do when every gremlin in West Texas is chasing you with a big stick? What do you do when all the spammers in Outer Mongolia are bombarding your inbox so that it looks like Buddha’s Belly?

I’ll tell you what to do. You do just like that little kid did and look for the right time to go right back in that store and sell another tomato. But understand, you won’t go back in that store until you become dissatisfied with what you GOT!

And when you don’t get what you expect, and you inspect what you got, and what you got is not what you want, then you’re in a prime position for the fire of desire to burn a trail of dissatisfaction in you a mile wide and a yard deep. And,…… If it doesn’t…….. Then just go rub Buddha’s Belly. Nah….., I’m kidding. Don’t you get mad at me.

When the fire of desire becomes so ingrained in you that it forms without you realizing it, then you will not have arrived, but you’ll be well on your way.
